2017-10-02kvm: check KVM_CAP_SYNC_MMU with kvm_vm_check_extension()Greg Kurz
On a server-class ppc host, this capability depends on the KVM type, ie, HV or PR. If both KVM are present in the kernel, we will always get the HV specific value, even if we explicitely requested PR on the command line. This can have an impact if we're using hugepages or a balloon device. Since we've already created the VM at the time any user calls kvm_has_sync_mmu(), switching to kvm_vm_check_extension() is enough to fix any potential issue. It is okay for the other archs that also implement KVM_CAP_SYNC_MMU, ie, mips, s390, x86 and arm, because they don't depend on the VM being created or not. While here, let's cache the state of this extension in a bool variable, since it has several users in the code, as suggested by Thomas Huth. 2017-07-11ARM: KVM: Enable in-kernel timers with user space gicAlexander Graf
When running with KVM enabled, you can choose between emulating the gic in kernel or user space. If the kernel supports in-kernel virtualization of the interrupt controller, it will default to that. If not, if will default to user space emulation. Unfortunately when running in user mode gic emulation, we miss out on interrupt events which are only available from kernel space, such as the timer. This patch leverages the new kernel/user space pending line synchronization for timer events. It does not handle PMU events yet. 2017-07-04include/exec/poison: Mark CONFIG_KVM as poisoned, tooThomas Huth
CONFIG_KVM is only defined for target-specific code, so nobody should use it by accident in common code. To avoid such subtle bugs, CONFIG_KVM is now marked as poisoned in common code. The header include/sysemu/kvm.h is somewhat special since it is included all over the place from common code, too, so we need some extra logic via "#ifdef NEED_CPU_H" here to make sure that we can compile all files without problems. 2017-07-04Move CONFIG_KVM related definitions to kvm_i386.hThomas Huth
pc.h and sysemu/kvm.h are also included from common code (where CONFIG_KVM is not available), so the #defines that depend on CONFIG_KVM should not be declared here to avoid that anybody is using them in a wrong way. Since we're also going to poison CONFIG_KVM for common code, let's move them to kvm_i386.h instead. Most of the dummy definitions from sysemu/kvm.h are also unused since the code that uses them is only compiled for CONFIG_KVM (e.g. target/i386/kvm.c), so the unused defines are also simply dropped here instead of being moved. 2017-06-13kvm-all: Pass an error object to kvm_device_accessEric Auger
In some circumstances, we don't want to abort if the kvm_device_access fails. This will be the case during ITS migration, in case the ITS table save/restore fails because the guest did not program the vITS correctly. So let's pass an error object to the function and return the ioctl value. New callers will be able to make a decision upon this returned value. Existing callers pass &error_abort which will cause the function to abort on failure. 2017-06-06migration: Mark CPU states dirty before incoming migration/loadvmDavid Gibson
As a rule, CPU internal state should never be updated when !cpu->kvm_vcpu_dirty (or the HAX equivalent). If that is done, then subsequent calls to cpu_synchronize_state() - usually safe and idempotent - will clobber state. However, we routinely do this during a loadvm or incoming migration. Usually this is called shortly after a reset, which will clear all the cpu dirty flags with cpu_synchronize_all_post_reset(). Nothing is expected to set the dirty flags again before the cpu state is loaded from the incoming stream. This means that it isn't safe to call cpu_synchronize_state() from a post_load handler, which is non-obvious and potentially inconvenient. We could cpu_synchronize_all_state() before the loadvm, but that would be overkill since a) we expect the state to already be synchronized from the reset and b) we expect to completely rewrite the state with a call to cpu_synchronize_all_post_init() at the end of qemu_loadvm_state(). To clear this up, this patch introduces cpu_synchronize_pre_loadvm() and associated helpers, which simply marks the cpu state as dirty without actually changing anything. i.e. it says we want to discard any existing KVM (or HAX) state and replace it with what we're going to load. 2016-07-21kvm-irqchip: i386: add hook for add/remove virqPeter Xu
Adding two hooks to be notified when adding/removing msi routes. There are two kinds of MSI routes: - in kvm_irqchip_add_irq_route(): before assigning IRQFD. Used by vhost, vfio, etc. - in kvm_irqchip_send_msi(): when sending direct MSI message, if direct MSI not allowed, we will first create one MSI route entry in the kernel, then trigger it. This patch only hooks the first one (irqfd case). We do not need to take care for the 2nd one, since it's only used by QEMU userspace (kvm-apic) and the messages will always do in-time translation when triggered. While we need to note them down for the 1st one, so that we can notify the kernel when cache invalidation happens. Also, we do not hook IOAPIC msi routes (we have explicit notifier for IOAPIC to keep its cache updated). We only need to care about irqfd users. 2016-05-27PPC/KVM: early validation of vcpu idGreg Kurz
The KVM API restricts vcpu ids to be < KVM_CAP_MAX_VCPUS. On PowerPC targets, depending on the number of threads per core in the host and in the guest, some topologies do generate higher vcpu ids actually. When this happens, QEMU bails out with the following error: kvm_init_vcpu failed: Invalid argument The KVM_CREATE_VCPU ioctl has several EINVAL return paths, so it is not possible to fully disambiguate. 2015-09-24intc/gic: Extract some reusable vGIC codePavel Fedin
Some functions previously used only by vGICv2 are useful also for vGICv3 implementation. Untie them from GICState and make accessible from within other modules: - kvm_arm_gic_set_irq() - kvm_gic_supports_attr() - moved to common code and renamed to kvm_device_check_attr() - kvm_gic_access() - turned into GIC-independent kvm_device_access(). Data pointer changed to void * because some GICv3 registers are 64-bit wide Some of these changes are not used right now, but they will be helpful for implementing live migration. Actually kvm_dist_get() and kvm_dist_put() could also be made reusable, but they would require two extra parameters (s->dev_fd and s->num_cpu) as well as lots of typecasts of 's' to DeviceState * and back to GICState *. This makes the code very ugly so i decided to stop at this point. I tried also an approach with making a base class for all possible GICs, but it would contain only three variables (dev_fd, cpu_num and irq_num), and accessing them through the rest of the code would be again tedious (either ugly casts or qemu-style separate object pointer). 2015-01-12kvm: extend kvm_irqchip_add_msi_route to work on s390Frank Blaschka
on s390 MSI-X irqs are presented as thin or adapter interrupts for this we have to reorganize the routing entry to contain valid information for the adapter interrupt code on s390. To minimize impact on existing code we introduce an architecture function to fixup the routing entry. 2014-12-15KVM_CAP_IRQFD and KVM_CAP_IRQFD_RESAMPLE checksEric Auger
Compute kvm_irqfds_allowed by checking the KVM_CAP_IRQFD extension. Remove direct settings in architecture specific files. Add a new kvm_resamplefds_allowed variable, initialized by checking the KVM_CAP_IRQFD_RESAMPLE extension. Add a corresponding kvm_resamplefds_enabled() function. A special notice for s390 where KVM_CAP_IRQFD was not immediatly advirtised when irqfd capability was introduced in the kernel. KVM_CAP_IRQ_ROUTING was advertised instead. This was fixed in "KVM: s390: announce irqfd capability", ebc3226202d5956a5963185222982d435378b899 whereas irqfd support was brought in 84223598778ba08041f4297fda485df83414d57e, "KVM: s390: irq routing for adapter interrupts". Both commits first appear in 3.15 so there should not be any kernel version impacted by this QEMU modification. 2014-11-23pc: kvm: check if KVM has free memory slots to avoid abort()Igor Mammedov
When more memory devices are used than available KVM memory slots, QEMU crashes with: kvm_alloc_slot: no free slot available Aborted (core dumped) Fix this by checking that KVM has a free slot before attempting to map memory in guest address space. 2014-10-04accel: Move KVM accel registration to kvm-all.cEduardo Habkost
Note that this has an user-visible side-effect: instead of reporting "KVM is not supported for this target", QEMU binaries not supporting KVM will report "kvm accelerator does not exist". As kvm_availble() always return 1 when CONFIG_KVM is enabled, we don't need to set AccelClass.available anymore. kvm_enabled() is not being completely removed yet only because qmp_query_kvm() still uses it. This also allows us to make kvm_init() static. Reviewed-by: Paolo Bonzini <pbonzini@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: Eduardo Habkost <ehabkost@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: Paolo Bonzini <pbonzini@redhat.com>

2014-09-08KVM: Add helper to run KVM_CHECK_EXTENSION on vm fdAlexander Graf
We now can call KVM_CHECK_EXTENSION on the kvm fd or on the vm fd, whereas the vm version is more accurate when it comes to PPC KVM. Add a helper to make the vm version available that falls back to the non-vm variant if the vm one is not available yet to stay compatible. Signed-off-by: Alexander Graf <agraf@suse.de>
