2021-12-15hw: Replace trivial drive_get_next() by drive_get()Markus Armbruster
drive_get_next() is basically a bad idea. It returns the "next" block backend of a certain interface type. "Next" means bus=0,unit=N, where subsequent calls count N up from zero, per interface type. This lets you define unit numbers implicitly by execution order. If the order changes, or new calls appear "in the middle", unit numbers change. ABI break. Hard to spot in review. A number of machines connect just one backend with drive_get_next(). Change them to use drive_get() directly. This makes the (zero) unit number explicit in the code. 2020-09-22qom: simplify object_find_property / object_class_find_propertyDaniel P. Berrangé
When debugging QEMU it is often useful to put a breakpoint on the error_setg_internal method impl. Unfortunately the object_property_add / object_class_property_add methods call object_property_find / object_class_property_find methods to check if a property exists already before adding the new property. As a result there are a huge number of calls to error_setg_internal on startup of most QEMU commands, making it very painful to set a breakpoint on this method. Most callers of object_find_property and object_class_find_property, however, pass in a NULL for the Error parameter. This simplifies the methods to remove the Error parameter entirely, and then adds some new wrapper methods that are able to raise an Error when needed. Signed-off-by: Daniel P. 2019-08-16Include hw/irq.h a lot lessMarkus Armbruster
In my "build everything" tree, changing hw/irq.h triggers a recompile of some 5400 out of 6600 objects (not counting tests and objects that don't depend on qemu/osdep.h). hw/hw.h supposedly includes it for convenience. Several other headers include it just to get qemu_irq and.or qemu_irq_handler. Move the qemu_irq and qemu_irq_handler typedefs from hw/irq.h to qemu/typedefs.h, and then include hw/irq.h only where it's still needed. Touching it now recompiles only some 500 objects. 2019-07-05hw/arm: Replace global smp variables with machine smp propertiesLike Xu
The global smp variables in arm are replaced with smp machine properties. The init_cpus() and *_create_rpu() are refactored to pass MachineState. A local variable of the same name would be introduced in the declaration phase if it's used widely in the context OR replace it on the spot if it's only used once. No semantic changes. The header file hw/arm/arm.h now includes only declarations relating to hw/arm/boot.c functionality. Rename it accordingly, and adjust its header comment. The bulk of this commit was created via perl -pi -e 's|hw/arm/arm.h|hw/arm/boot.h|' hw/arm/*.c include/hw/arm/*.h In a few cases we can just delete the #include: hw/arm/msf2-soc.c, include/hw/arm/aspeed_soc.h and include/hw/arm/bcm2836.h did not require it. 2018-09-25scsi: move lsi53c8xx_create() callers to lsi53c8xx_handle_legacy_cmdline()Mark Cave-Ayland
As part of commits a64aa5785d "hw: Deprecate -drive if=scsi with non-onboard HBAs" and b891538e81 "hw/ppc/prep: Fix implicit creation of "-drive if=scsi" devices" the lsi53c895a_create() and lsi53c810_create() functions were added to wrap pci_create_simple() and scsi_bus_legacy_handle_cmdline(). Unfortunately this prevents us from changing qdev properties on the device and/or changing the PCI configuration. By switching over to using the new lsi53c8xx_handle_legacy_cmdline() function then the caller can now configure and realize the LSI SCSI device exactly as required. 2018-08-20hw/dma/pl080: Don't use CPU address space for DMA accessesPeter Maydell
Currently our PL080/PL081 model uses a combination of the CPU's address space (via cpu_physical_memory_{read,write}()) and the system address space for performing DMA accesses. For the PL081s in the MPS FPGA images, their DMA accesses must go via Master Security Controllers. Switch the PL080/PL081 model to take a MemoryRegion property which defines its downstream for making DMA accesses. Since the PL08x are only used in two board models, we make provision of the 'downstream' link mandatory and convert both users at once, rather than having it be optional with a default to the system address space. there are 2 use cases to deal with: 1: fixed CPU models per board/soc 2: boards with user configurable cpu_model and fallback to default cpu_model if user hasn't specified one explicitly For the 1st drop intermediate cpu_model parsing and use const cpu type directly, which replaces: typename = object_class_get_name( cpu_class_by_name(TYPE_ARM_CPU, cpu_model)) object_new(typename) with object_new(FOO_CPU_TYPE_NAME) or cpu_generic_init(BASE_CPU_TYPE, "my cpu model") with cpu_create(FOO_CPU_TYPE_NAME) as result 1st use case doesn't have to invoke not necessary translation and not needed code is removed. For the 2nd 1: set default cpu type with MachineClass::default_cpu_type and 2: use generic cpu_model parsing that done before machine_init() is run and: 2.1: drop custom cpu_model parsing where pattern is: typename = object_class_get_name( cpu_class_by_name(TYPE_ARM_CPU, cpu_model)) [parse_features(typename, cpu_model, &err) ] 2.2: or replace cpu_generic_init() which does what 2.1 does + create_cpu(typename) with just create_cpu(machine->cpu_type) as result cpu_name -> cpu_type translation is done using generic machine code one including parsing optional features if supported/present (removes a bunch of duplicated cpu_model parsing code) and default cpu type is defined in an uniform way within machine_class_init callbacks instead of adhoc places in boadr's machine_init code. 2017-09-07hw/arm: Set ignore_memory_transaction_failures for most ARM boardsPeter Maydell
Set the MachineClass flag ignore_memory_transaction_failures for almost all ARM boards. This means they retain the legacy behaviour that accesses to unimplemented addresses will RAZ/WI rather than aborting, when a subsequent commit adds support for external aborts. The exceptions are: * virt -- we know that guests won't try to prod devices that we don't describe in the device tree or ACPI tables * mps2 -- this board was written to use unimplemented-device for all the ranges with devices we don't yet handle New boards should not set the flag, but instead be written like the mps2. Block backends defined with "-drive if=T" with T other than "none" are meant to be picked up by machine initialization code: a suitable frontend gets created and wired up automatically. Drives defined with if=scsi are also picked up by SCSI HBAs added with -device, unlike other interface types. Deprecate this usage, as follows. Create the frontends for onboard HBAs in machine initialization code, exactly like we do for if=ide and other interface types. Change scsi_legacy_handle_cmdline() to create a frontend only when it's still missing, and warn that this usage is deprecated. Commit 57cb38b included qapi/error.h into qemu/osdep.h to get the Error typedef. Since then, we've moved to include qemu/osdep.h everywhere. Its file comment explains: "To avoid getting into possible circular include dependencies, this file should not include any other QEMU headers, with the exceptions of config-host.h, compiler.h, os-posix.h and os-win32.h, all of which are doing a similar job to this file and are under similar constraints." qapi/error.h doesn't do a similar job, and it doesn't adhere to similar constraints: it includes qapi-types.h. That's in excess of 100KiB of crap most .c files don't actually need. Add the typedef to qemu/typedefs.h, and include that instead of qapi/error.h. Include qapi/error.h in .c files that need it and don't get it now. Include qapi-types.h in qom/object.h for uint16List. Update scripts/clean-includes accordingly. Update it further to match reality: replace config.h by config-target.h, add sysemu/os-posix.h, sysemu/os-win32.h. Update the list of includes in the qemu/osdep.h comment quoted above similarly. This reduces the number of objects depending on qapi/error.h from "all of them" to less than a third. Unfortunately, the number depending on qapi-types.h shrinks only a little. Symptom: $ qemu-system-x86_64 -m 10000000 Unexpected error in ram_block_add() at /work/armbru/qemu/exec.c:1456: upstream-qemu: cannot set up guest memory 'pc.ram': Cannot allocate memory Aborted (core dumped) Root cause: commit ef701d7 screwed up handling of out-of-memory conditions. Before the commit, we report the error and exit(1), in one place, ram_block_add(). The commit lifts the error handling up the call chain some, to three places. Fine. Except it uses &error_abort in these places, changing the behavior from exit(1) to abort(), and thus undoing the work of commit 3922825 "exec: Don't abort when we can't allocate guest memory". The three places are: * memory_region_init_ram() Commit 4994653 (right after commit ef701d7) lifted the error handling further, through memory_region_init_ram(), multiplying the incorrect use of &error_abort. Later on, imitation of existing (bad) code may have created more. * memory_region_init_ram_ptr() The &error_abort is still there. * memory_region_init_rom_device() Doesn't need fixing, because commit 33e0eb5 (soon after commit ef701d7) lifted the error handling further, and in the process changed it from &error_abort to passing it up the call chain. Correct, because the callers are realize() methods. Fix the error handling after memory_region_init_ram() with a Coccinelle semantic patch: @r@ expression mr, owner, name, size, err; position p; @@ memory_region_init_ram(mr, owner, name, size, ( - &error_abort + &error_fatal | err@p ) ); @script:python@ p << r.p; @@ print "%s:%s:%s" % (p[0].file, p[0].line, p[0].column) When the last argument is &error_abort, it gets replaced by &error_fatal. This is the fix. If the last argument is anything else, its position is reported. This lets us check the fix is complete. Four positions get reported: * ram_backend_memory_alloc() Error is passed up the call chain, ultimately through user_creatable_complete(). As far as I can tell, it's callers all handle the error sanely. * fsl_imx25_realize(), fsl_imx31_realize(), dp8393x_realize() DeviceClass.realize() methods, errors handled sanely further up the call chain. We're good. Test case again behaves: $ qemu-system-x86_64 -m 10000000 qemu-system-x86_64: cannot set up guest memory 'pc.ram': Cannot allocate memory [Exit 1 ] The next commits will repair the rest of commit ef701d7's damage. Device models should access their block backends only through the block-backend.h API. Convert them, and drop direct includes of inappropriate headers. Just four uses of BlockDriverState are left: * The Xen paravirtual block device backend (xen_disk.c) opens images itself when set up via xenbus, bypassing blockdev.c. I figure it should go through qmp_blockdev_add() instead. * Device model "usb-storage" prompts for keys. No other device model does, and this one probably shouldn't do it, either. * ide_issue_trim_cb() uses bdrv_aio_discard() instead of blk_aio_discard() because it fishes its backend out of a BlockAIOCB, which has only the BlockDriverState. * PC87312State has an unused BlockDriverState[] member. If the CPU is a Cortex-A9 then we should set its reset-cbar property so that the guest can read the correct PERIPHBASE/CBAR register value; newer versions of the Linux kernel (as of commit bc41b8724 in 3.12) will otherwise assume the CPU is a buggy single core A9 SoC. The realview-pbx-a9 is the only one of the cluster of boards in realview.c which works with the Cortex-A9 (ie which gets an a9mpcore_priv device); make sure it also has reset-cbar set correctly. We set default boot order "cad" in every single machine definition except "pseries" and "moxiesim", even though very few boards actually care for boot order, and "cad" makes sense for even fewer. Machines that care: * pc and its variants Accept up to three letters 'a', 'b' (undocumented alias for 'a'), 'c', 'd' and 'n'. Reject all others (fatal with -boot). * nseries (n800, n810) Check whether order starts with 'n'. Silently ignored otherwise. * prep, g3beige, mac99 Extract the first character the machine understands (subset of 'a'..'f'). Silently ignored otherwise. * spapr Accept an arbitrary string (vl.c restricts it to contain only 'a'..'p', no duplicates). * sun4[mdc] Use the first character. Silently ignored otherwise. Strip characters these machines ignore from their default boot order. For all other machines, remove the unused default boot order alltogether. Note that my rename of QEMUMachine member boot_order to default_boot_order and QEMUMachineInitArgs member boot_device to boot_order has a welcome side effect: it makes every use of boot orders visible in this patch, for easy review.
